Karpov the Wrecked Train: Artist Statement
I use photography as a means to document the world around me. My personal work emphasizes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues, I strive for the tension between chaos and order, visual chaos is everywhere. As a result, viewers often see my photography as interactions of social life and the realities of labor and class. A common theme is my fascination and capture of seeking out the unknown and the stories that are not at first obvious. I photograph people in their natural environments because I am curious of what lies behind their eyes and where they have been and where they hope to go.
He has photographed everything from commercial architecture, magazine editorial pieces, music events, political activism, and other news photojournalism. Karpov is better known for his work photographing the everyday lives of people in and around the city’s he’s lived in… capturing intensely personal and spontaneous images of everyday life. Karpov is able to elevate his work beyond mere facts.
Since 2009, he has exhibited his work over the Detroit and New York metro areas
